Well, it finally happened. The day has arrived when Scraps have come to Duel Links. I've waited a long time for these junkers to finally make it over, and while I wish we had gotten a few more cards I'm certainly happy they've arrived so early into 5Ds life. They have a lot of room to grow, and while it will take some work to get these boys going in Duel Links it seems like they will be a fun budget option for Synchros.
To begin with, I am happy to report that this does in fact appear to be a good budget option for anyone looking to play with some Synchros on the cheap, at least compared to the other options currently. The only high rarity cards you really need are 3x Scrap Chimera and 3x Scrapstorm from the new box. Everything else you'll need in the main deck is from this box as well. The extra deck will require a bit of explanation later on, but at the basic level you will only need at least one Atomic Scrap Dragon from the new box and any number of Giganticastle from the Card Trader. I will go over some options from other boxes later to potentially improve your builds, but for the most part this is all you will need to get started with Scraps.
With that out of the way, I'd like to offer what insight I can on this quirky little deck. I've been a fan of Scraps for a long time, and hopefully I can help any aspiring Scrap players out on their journey to smash a bunch of junk piles into dragons.
So let's go, here's a "short" crash course on Scraps.
How to Play Scraps: A Complete Guide
Scraps are an incredibly unique and fun deck to play. They can be a bit slow to get started, but I think the 20-card format of Duel Links will increase their consistency immensely. I'm personally very excited to see where Scraps go from here, hopefully receiving some additional support in future releases so that they can reach their maximum potential.
I hope this guide was useful in helping those of you wanting to understand Scraps. If you have any questions I would be happy to answer those I can get to, and if you feel there is anything I've left out please leave a comment for others to see. I hope to see a lot of new Scrap fans in Duel Links once the new box hits, and hopefully they continue to thrive in this new Synchro era.
Edit:
I'm sure there's much more possible than this, especially with the level altering skills unique to Duel Links. I've found The Tricky to be very useful in getting to Atomic Scrap Dragon as it is easy to special summon him after summoning Scrap Searcher, allowing him to dodge Searcher's field wiping effect.
In addition, Scrape Lube has actually proven more useful than I first thought. Being able to bring back Scrap Shark with its effect negated has been very helpful for going into a variety of synchros. It is still very risky as you are giving up your battle phase, however if you are going first it can be a very powerful tool.
I'm pleasantly surprised with what I've found thus far, and my confidence in the deck has actually risen quite a bit. Hopefully some actual visual examples will help make clearer all the potential of Scraps.
Edit 2:
If you're reading this post-release of the Power of Bravery Minibox, I made a short post in a different thread detailing where I think Scraps are at the moment.
In short, Synchro-centric Scraps are a bit hard to play and I recommend focusing more on the recovery ability of Scraps. I think using Scrap Golem as a centerpiece to grind out advantage and control the board with Scrap Searcher and Scrap Lube is currently the best strategy for Scraps. It should also be noted that Atomic Scrap Dragon is still possible to easily access with just Scrap Golem, Scrap Orthros, and Scrap Searcher. The video from the first edit contains a clip showcasing a board utilizing Golem and Lube that could end in either a Searcher combo or Atomic Scrap Dragon, so if you need a visual example I highly recommend watching it.
In addition, I had forgotten at the time I wrote the guide but one of the upcoming events will be introducing Goyo Guardian. This is a big deal for Scraps as all of their monsters are Earth meaning they can easily access this powerful synchro. I think builds centered around Goyo and general board control could be very powerful, especially if using cards like The Rock Spirit with Scrap Worm to easily spam Goyo Guardians onto the field.
I will likely not be making any more updates to this guide for now. However, if we receive an additional wave of Scrap support in the future or any other similarly significant additions I will create an updated post addressing these new cards and how they fit into the Scrap strategy.
I'd like to thank you all one last time for all the positive feedback I have received on this guide. I haven't been as heavily involved with Duel Links for quite awhile prior to the release of 5Ds, and the warm reception I've received from this guide has inspired me to try to put out more helpful content of this caliber in the future. I'm not sure what the next topic will be that I will do an in-depth write up on, that is mostly up to Konami, but I promise this will not be the last guide you see from me.
Thank you all for taking the time to read and comment on my guide to Scraps. I hope you are all able to find as much enjoyment playing this deck as I had writing about it.
