Sex For Grades: A Canker Worm In Nigerian University Education System.

Sex For Grades: A Canker Worm In Nigerian University Education System.

The truth is, we all know about it. No single person who has been within the walls of a Nigerian higher institution can claim ignorance of this. Each and everyone of us knows at least one lecturer in our various departments who indulge in such lewd acts.

In some cases, it is so extreme that even as a guy you could be targeted simply because you are seen hanging around a girl who is a target.

A friend of mine got two extra years because a lecturer liked his girlfriend and she refused his advances. The lecturer got his other lecturer friends to frustrate the both of them academically.

It was one of the lecturer's friends who approached my friend and told him to cut ties with his girlfriend if he wanted to graduate. That was during his second extra year, one he got for an elective course!

The girl in question did not graduate until the year her residency expired. She got a pass degree, which is basically a certificate of attendance and has no value in the Nigerian Labour Market; that one we call " Let My People Go". This is one of thousands of stories.

Lecturers in Nigerian universities are demi gods, you cannot hurt them. When you get into trouble with them, you are an egg and they are rocks. If they roll over you, you break. If you roll over them, you still break. There is no happy ending for you.

A lot of Nigerian graduates today are walking around with 3rd class and pass degrees, not because they are not intelligent or due to negligence in their studies, they only got those grades because they refused to bend to the system.
Kiki Mordi did not even graduate!

Someday I will talk about the many abuses students pass through in Nigerian tertiary institutions. The broken dreams, the lost futures, the damaged lives... But I would not want anything to steal the spotlight from #SexForGrades, so let us save those for a later date.

Because it is not just sex for grades. There is money for grades, servitude for grades, favours for grades, and grades by connection. I know this, you know this, we all know this.

It is just sad that we had to wait for the BBC to come all the way form the United Kingdom to expose this injustice for us from right under our noses.
