According to recently released data from the US Census, 5.2% of workers in the US worked at home in 2017—or 8 million people. That share is up from 5% in 2016, and 3.3% in 2000.Of those 8 million, some have remote jobs meaning their company allows them to work from home rather than work in an office. More and more employers are embracing the idea of remote work because it’s been shown to greatly increase an employee’s productivity and decrease attrition.
And some of those 8 million people who work from home have sought out the flexible work opportunities the internet has made possible through things like freelancing sites like Upwork and Guru.
There are a lot of significant advantages to work at home jobs, and there are tons of home opportunities out there. But not all work from home jobs you see during your job search are above board. If you want to work from your couch, these are legitimate work from home jobs.
Education
Whether you’re a teacher, a writer, or a college student, there are lots of opportunities to makemoney from homehelping people looking to learn a new language or helping college students who slept late and missed class.
- VIPKID VIPKID is a site for English speakers to teach ESL to children aged 4-12 in China. Each session lasts 30 minutes, and VIPKID supplies teaching materials for you. Teachers must hold at least a Bachelor’s degree, but it doesn’t have to be in education and have some experience teaching grades K-12 in an American or Canadian school. You must have wired, high-speed internet and accept a 6-month renewable contract although you are not an employee but an independent contractor.
- Cambly Cambly is a video language tutoring service. It was started by two former Google employees who believe the best way to become fluent in a language is to practice speaking it with a native speaker in a relaxed, informal setting.
- Brainfuse Brainfuse is an online tutoring program for students from elementary school age to college students. A four-year college degree is required, but a teaching certification is not. The service is available 24/7. Tutors earn $10 per session, and each session lasts about an hour. Payment is made via direct deposit or mailed as a check every two weeks.
- ETS ETS pays people to score tests for various academic institutions. The pay is pretty good, between $10-20 per hour depending on the type of test. They do require teaching experience or some college. You choose the shifts you want to work; shifts are in four-hour blocks. Payment is made by check twice a month.
- Shmoop Shmoop hires writers to create study and test prep guides. Most jobs require a degree, and some require teaching experience. The gigs pay well, some as much as $1000 per completed project so you can be sure that most of the jobs are not something you can knock out in a couple of hours.
- Survey Junkie Survey Junkie pays consumers for their opinions. Create a free account, answer some demographic questions, and you’re matched with surveys. For each survey you complete, you’ll earn points that toward cash via PayPal or gift cards.
- Prize Rebel Prize Rebel is a survey site, similar to Survey Junkie. Members earn points for answering surveys, watching videos, and referring new users. Each task you complete earns you points, most are worth between 50 and 200 and surveys earn the most points.
- Swagbucks If you shop online, why not get money back for it? When you join Swagbucks, you earn cash back when you shop at more than 1,500 retailers including Amazon, Target, and Starbucks.
- Ibotta Ibotta is a coupon app that pays you for saving money on the household items and groceries you buy regularly.
- InBoxDollars InBoxDollars is a “get paid to site.” Users make money from home through completing tasks like taking online surveys, playing games, and watching videos. There are several similar sites floating around, but InboxDollars is continuously updated with new tasks giving users lots of opportunities to earn money.
- Domainite Domainite pays for copy editing. They require no previous experience, but you do have to pass an editing test. This site doesn’t pay well, 0.25 per 100 words edited but if you’re fast, it can bring in some extra money. They pay via Paypal weekly.
- Gramlee Gramlee offers several editing services including copy editing, proofreading, and grammar checks. A background in writing or journalism is preferred. Customer can submit works of up to 3,000 words and editors are expected to complete each project within 24 hours.
- ICUC ICUC work involves being a social media manager and duties include promoting and protecting client brands on various social media platforms. Some experience with modding or at least with social media is preferred. You will work in eight-hour shifts. Pay is dependent on experience and ranges from $10-18 an hour and is paid every two weeks.
- LiveWorld LiveWorld moderators monitor social media sites for their clients. You will work on specified shifts. The pay is between $8-10 an hour and sent via direct deposit or paper check every two weeks.
- Concentrix Concentrix is a staffing company that serves clients in a variety of industries including banking, healthcare, and insurance. You will provide virtual customer service to the clients of those companies.
- Hilton Worldwide These jobs entail reservations and customer service. A high school diploma or GED and one year of customer service experience are required. You will also need a landline.
- U-Haul Customer service representatives working for U-Haul take customer calls to answer questions and make reservations for rental trucks and storage facilities. The base pay is $7.50 to $8.50 an hour, and you can earn bonuses when you book truck rentals.

You won’t make a full-time living doing online surveys, but they can be an excellent way to earn a little extra money or gift cards (which you can sell for extra money). And if you choose to do some of the online jobs on this list, you can double dip, do the surveys while you’re waiting for the next customer to call!Most surveys are worth between 100 and 200 points and take 5 to 20 minutes to complete. One point is equivalent to one cent, and you can see how many points a survey is worth and how long it takes to complete before you start. Of all the survey sites out there, Survey Junkie has the most surveys available as new ones appear daily.
Each point is worth one cent and can be redeemed for cash via PayPal or gift cards.
